Everyone’s affected by stress but how well are you really dealing with it? Stress isn’t a bad thing, in fact it’s an important part in living a happy healthy life.

The problem is, most of us are stuck in a fight or flight response that’s slowly eating away at our health and happiness. In fact, Psychology Today calls stress “The Killer Disease”.

What if it’s not the stress that’s killing you, but a chronic misuse of the stress system?

Your body uses stress to protect you from dangerous situations. When you sense danger you switch into fight or flight mode. Your resources are redirected from healing and digesting to speed and strength—you’ve got to survive after all.

This response is amazing, life saving and even inspiring. The problem comes when the stress response is triggered with no real and present danger, or after the danger has long since passed.

Your brain doesn’t know if you’re actually experiencing something, or if you’re just imagining it.

You might be worried about an event in the future or maybe you’re listening to someone else’s problems, you could be watching the news. All your body knows is that you’re experiencing something you don’t want. You are in danger.

It’s less about the details of the danger, and more about how dangerous you consider it to be.

If facing your stress is as scary as a bear attacking, your body will prepare itself for a bear attack.

Your muscles tense up, especially in the neck and shoulders, they’re in charge of saving vital body parts. Your breath quickens as you prepare for a fight to the death, or to run for your life.

The thing is, if it’s your bills attacking and not an actual bear, the real physical battle never comes. All the energy your body just built up to save you isn’t necessary, so where does it go?

It get’s stored in the body because it’s not being expressed. The tension holds in the muscles creating an anxiously irritated feeling. Without a signal to switch out of danger mode the body learns to live here.

The battle of the bills is won much differently then the battle of bears.

Ideally once something like a bear attack occurs, and you presumably survive, your nervous system needs to switch from fight or flight back into rest and repair.

You need time to recovery from the battle and heal your injuries, you’ve just exhausted massive amounts of resources to survive and you need time to catch up. In the battle of the bills, this never happens.

Taking on bills is a mental battle not a physical one. When we’re triggered into fight or flight we loose access to the tools that would support us in things like, organization and a logical analysis of the situation…basically it’s hard to focus, where’s the bear!?

Stress isn’t about the event or situation, it’s the brains judgement that it doesn’t have the resources necessary to handle it.

No matter what the situation, whether it’s bills, relationships, health, or any of the other million stressful possibilities ahead of us, one thing is certain, with the right tools we can accomplish anything.

Given the wrong tools however, we’re bound for a frustrating ride towards stress, overwhelm pain and struggle.

Daily routine stressors are the hardest to notice because the “bills” never go away and the body gets no clear signal to return to normal function. It never gets a chance to catch up with itself.

I created this session because my clients were asking for it without even knowing they needed it.

I had multiple new clients come in with debilitating back and shoulder pains that the typical massage and chiropractic adjustments just wasn’t resolving. The only place they had left was pain killer, nerve blockers, injections, and surgeries.

I knew there was more to be done, I could feel in the quality of their muscle behavior that they were trapped in a chronic stress response.

The effects of Chronic Stress are far more prevalent than most people know. We live in a society that has learned to cope with diminished bodily function, and have allowed ourselves to settle for less than what we deserve.
